Why We Are Creating the House of Numbat Atelier in Norwich

A New Chapter for House of Numbat

House of Numbat is entering a new chapter.

From our home and studio in Norwich, Norfolk, we are preparing to create the House of Numbat Atelier: a small, independent place where ideas can be developed, existing garments can be thoughtfully reworked, and new Numbat clothing can be produced in limited quantities.

It will not be a factory, and it is not intended to become one.

The atelier will be a working creative space—a place for designing, cutting, sewing, developing prototypes and gradually building collections with care.

For us, this is not simply a change in how clothes are made. It represents a return to the foundations of Numbat: knowledge, craftsmanship, responsible production and respect for the materials from which every garment begins.

Why an Atelier?

The word atelier describes more than a workshop. It suggests a place where creative ideas and practical skills exist together.

In an atelier, design is not separated from construction. A garment can move from an idea to a pattern, from a pattern to a sample, and from a sample to a finished piece within the same creative environment.

This closeness matters to us.

When designers understand how clothing is constructed, they make better design decisions. When production remains close to the creative process, problems can be identified earlier. Fabrics can be considered carefully, details can be refined, and garments can be produced according to their real purpose rather than the demands of speed.

The House of Numbat Atelier will allow us to work in this thoughtful way.

Building on Manufacturing Knowledge

Galina and Stoyan are Numbat Ltd.

Between us, we bring engineering education, decades of garment-manufacturing knowledge, practical business experience and a long understanding of how ideas become physical products.

We know that a successful garment does not begin and end with a beautiful sketch. It depends on fabric, pattern, fit, construction, costing, production planning and many careful decisions that customers may never see.

This knowledge forms the foundation of our atelier.

We are beginning modestly, with the sewing equipment we already have, and we plan to add two or three carefully selected machines as the work develops. We do not need to recreate a large factory. Our purpose is to establish a capable studio in which we can make smaller quantities, test ideas and maintain close control over quality.

Starting small gives us the freedom to proceed carefully.

Small-Batch Clothing Made in Norfolk

The House of Numbat Atelier will focus on limited production rather than volume.

Small-batch manufacturing allows each design to receive greater attention. It also helps us avoid unnecessary stock, make responsible use of materials and produce according to genuine demand.

Where appropriate, we intend to source fabrics and specialist services from British suppliers and manufacturers. We want to understand where our materials come from and build relationships with businesses that share our appreciation of quality and long-term value.

New garments made entirely in our Norwich atelier will be identified clearly and accurately. Our aim is for “Made in England” to describe a genuine process, not merely function as a marketing phrase.

Giving Existing Numbat Garments a New Life

The atelier will also help us reconsider garments from earlier Numbat collections.

We still have small quantities of original Numbat clothing—often only five or six pieces, and rarely more than ten pieces, from an individual design. These are not anonymous garments or unwanted mass-produced stock. They are part of Numbat’s own history.

Many were created using beautiful, high-quality fabrics that deserve to be preserved.

Instead of automatically sending these pieces for recycling or donation, we will examine them individually. Some may remain exactly as they were originally designed. Others may be carefully altered, repaired or reworked in the House of Numbat Atelier.

This process could involve refining a silhouette, changing a detail, improving the fit or transforming an existing garment into a unique atelier edition.

Any reworked garment will be described honestly. Its original manufacture and its later work in Norwich will not be confused. The purpose is not to erase its history, but to add a new chapter to it.

Against Speed

The philosophy of the atelier is closely connected to our forthcoming book, Against Speed.

Speed is often presented as progress. In fashion, however, unnecessary speed can result in poor decisions, excessive production, wasted materials and garments that were never given enough time to develop properly.

We believe that slowness, when it is purposeful, is a form of intelligence.

It allows us to study a fabric before cutting it, correct a pattern before producing it and ask whether a garment needs to exist before making more of it. It gives craftsmanship the time it requires.

The House of Numbat Atelier will put these principles into practice. Against Speed will document and explain the thinking behind them.

Made in the House of Numbat, England

From our studio in Norwich, we are beginning to build again—one garment, one book and one careful decision at a time.
